Tour Details
Whether you’re on a safari to spot big cats or breathe in the rich forest air, you’ll find your eyes always peeled for a flash of that distinct burning orange of a tiger’s coat.
Welcome to Kanha National Park, a centuries-old dry deciduous forest that has remained home to hundreds of species of birds, animals, insects and plants. At last count, over 100 tigers live in the national park, along with at least 300 species of birds, 43 species of mammals, 26 species of reptiles and over 500 species of insects. So, while sighting a tiger may be down to your luck, you will still be rewarded with the experience of traversing an ancient land teeming with all kinds of life forms.
One of the magical experiences in Kanha is watching the day break over the forest during the morning safari. Misty air is punctured by tall trees such as Sal, Teak and Shisham, while the sun rays pierce through the tree cover. You’ll discover Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book in real life – the sights, the smells, and the quiet, lurking hum of life – as you try to spot the animals and birds.
Notable among the major species are the hard-ground Barasingha (the swamp deer distinguished by its 12-point antlers), Dhole (the Indian wild dog that hunts in packs) and Gaur (the Indian Bison). There are also leopards, bears, and Indian foxes. More prominently, you’ll notice the spotted deer and langurs, whose alarm calls you will want to keenly follow if you wish to see big cat action!
A visit to Kanha is usually all about the forest and the tigers, but once a week on Wednesdays you will see the village life spring up for the market fair. It’s a wonderful chance to sample the local culture, including its spirit made from the flowers of the Mahua tree.
This trip is a treat for nature lovers, animal enthusiasts and wildlife photographers.
